Poland raises sugar tax, extending levy to concentrates and diet supplements

Poland plans to increase its sugar tax, affecting sweetened beverages, concentrates and certain diet‑supplement drinks. The Government will adjust the rates, with a fixed charge per litre rising from 0.50 zł to 0.70 zł for drinks containing up to 5 g of sugar per 100 ml, and a variable charge increasing from 0.05 zł to 0.10 zł for each gram of sugar above that threshold. Additional levies of 0.10 zł to 1.00 zł will apply to drinks containing caffeine or taurine, and a maximum charge of 1.20 zł to 1.80 zł per litre will be possible. Concentrates will be taxed at a flat rate of 3 zł per litre or kilogram, and diet‑supplement drinks will face similar charges based on form and sugar content. About 96.5 % of the revenue will go to the National Health Fund for obesity‑related prevention and treatment programmes. The changes are slated for adoption by the Council of Ministers in the third quarter of 2026.
