Poland recognizes 516 same-sex marriages via transcription
The Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs has reported that 516 same-sex marriages performed abroad have been officially transcribed into the national civil status registry. This figure includes 318 marriages between men and 198 between women.
Following rulings by the Court of Justice of the European Union and domestic administrative courts, the transcription process grants these couples rights equivalent to those of opposite-sex couples married in Poland. Key benefits include access to Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) benefits, such as caregiver allowances for sick partners. Additionally, Finance Minister Andrzej Domański signed a general interpretation allowing couples to file joint personal income tax (PIT) returns.
Warsaw has processed the highest number of transcriptions with 209 cases, followed by Wrocław with 73 and Kraków with 46. The implementation of these procedures follows a landmark ruling by the Supreme Administrative Court regarding a marriage performed in Berlin in 2018.
