Fatal Trek on Rysy Peak Claims 50-Year-Old Hiker, Woman Seriously Injured

On 4 June a fatal accident occurred on the Rysy trail in the Tatra National Park. A 50‑year‑old man was found dead and a 50‑year‑old woman sustained severe injuries, including a broken spine and lung damage. The pair, friends from university, were on a trip to mark the woman’s 50th birthday.

Because heavy snow and dense fog prevented helicopter access, TOPR rescue teams reached the site on foot. After providing medical aid, the woman was air‑lifted first to Zakopane County Hospital and later to the University Hospital in Kraków. The prosecutor’s office opened a criminal investigation and ordered a forensic autopsy to determine the cause of death. Initial findings note that the man carried crampons but did not use them, and that the extreme weather conditions contributed to the tragedy.

Authorities urge hikers to be properly equipped and trained for high‑altitude conditions, emphasizing the importance of using appropriate gear such as crampons, ice axes, and helmets.
