High Tatras Polish tourist fatalities continue
Entities: High Tatras · Polish tourist · Chaty pod Rysami · Slovakia · Horská záchranná služba (HZS)
Overview
Rescue operations in the High Tatras have repeatedly exposed safety gaps among Polish visitors. After the July 4 2024 rescue of two Polish alpinists on Batizovský Summit, the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) warned about inadequate gear. Subsequent incidents—a 40‑year‑old tourist’s fatal fall near Čierny štít (14 July 2024), the death of a 40‑year‑old Toruń fire‑brigade member after a 200‑metre fall from Black Peak (13–14 July 2026), and a 21‑year‑old hiker’s 150‑metre slip on the Kohútik ridge (26 July 2026)—reinforced concerns about missing ropes, insufficient equipment and poor route planning.
On 29 July 2026 a 59‑year‑old Polish tourist suffered sudden chest pain while walking the red‑marked Mengusovská valley path, collapsed, and died despite immediate CPR, an AED from hut staff, and advanced resuscitation by HZS with a mechanical chest‑compression device. This was the second fatal incident on the Rysy routes within two days, prompting the Tatra National Park and rescue services to again urge hikers to be well equipped, check weather forecasts, and be prepared for medical emergencies.
HZS continues to urge Polish and other foreign visitors to travel with appropriate equipment, follow marked trails, and be prepared for health emergencies.
