Poland registers first same‑sex marriage in Warsaw

Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski announced that the city registry has issued the first marriage certificate to a same‑sex couple, complying with recent European Court of Justice rulings. The couple had been married abroad, but Polish law had previously prevented domestic registration.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the government will soon adopt a decree to recognize same‑sex marriages performed in other EU states, while stressing that the measure will not open the door to adoption for such couples. The EU Court of Justice ruled in November 2025 that all member states must acknowledge legally performed same‑sex marriages from other EU countries, even if national legislation does not permit them.

Following the court decision, Poland’s Supreme Administrative Court ordered the transfer of several foreign same‑sex marriages into the Polish civil register – seven cases have been processed so far. LGBT organisations estimate that between 30,000 and 40,000 same‑sex marriages involving at least one Polish citizen were performed abroad.
