Poland same‑sex partnership law – presidential delay

Overview

Poland began transcribing same‑sex marriages performed abroad in May 2026 after an EU Court of Justice ruling, with the first foreign marriage recorded in mid‑May and gender‑neutral certificate templates introduced. A Polish couple married in Denmark faced a suspension of their transcription request in late June, highlighting administrative hurdles.

The Sejm passed a civil‑partnership bill granting co‑habiting couples property, inheritance and medical‑information rights. The Senate approved the same‑sex civil‑union law on 25 June (55‑29) and sent it to President Karol Nawrocki, who has a constitutional deadline of about two weeks to act.

As of 1 July 2026, Nawrocki had still not announced whether he would sign or veto the measure. He met with PSL MP Urszula Pasławska, a co‑author of the bill, in a "last‑chance" discussion described as constructive, though advisers remain critical. Government equality envoy Katarzyna Kotula reiterated that the legislation is a step toward broader partnership rights, including future possibilities for registered partnerships and adoption for same‑sex couples, aligning with EU and ECHR rulings.

The law’s fate remains pending as the presidential deadline approaches, and no further legislative action has been announced.
