Poland rejects hosting allied nuclear warheads on its territory
Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski has explicitly stated that Poland does not want allied nuclear warheads stationed on its territory. Speaking at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Zalewski clarified that while Warsaw intends to remain an active participant in NATO’s collective nuclear deterrence framework, this does not necessitate the physical deployment of nuclear weapons within Polish borders.
Following these remarks, Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz clarified that Poland remains interested in participating in the NATO Nuclear Sharing program. He emphasized that the government is not withdrawing from discussions regarding the nuclear dimension of deterrence. Zalewski further noted that Poland has gained the opportunity to participate in the Dual Capabilities Airborne (DCA) program, which serves as a precursor to Nuclear Sharing.
The statements come amid ongoing discussions regarding the permanent stationing of U.S. troops in Poland. Zalewski indicated that talks are underway concerning several potential locations for permanent American military bases, noting that the U.S. has significant interests in the region. These security developments occur against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions following the invasion of Ukraine.
