Poland reports record rail freight and surging cabbage import costs
In July 2026, Polish rail freight reached a yearly high, with a total cargo mass of 19.5 million tons. This represents a 3.8% increase compared to July 2025. Freight work also hit a 2026 peak at 5.2 billion ton-kilometers, up 6.8% year-over-year. From January to July 2026, total cargo transported reached 126.7 million tons, a 2.4% increase over the same period in the previous year.
Separately, cabbage imports to Poland in the first half of 2026 have surged in value. The country spent 84.18 million PLN on imports between January and June, nearly matching the total expenditure for the entire year of 2025 (84.65 million PLN). During this six-month period, 24.26 thousand tons of white and red cabbage were imported, reaching 88.9% of the total volume imported in 2025.
North Macedonia remains the primary supplier, providing over 12,000 tons of cabbage valued at 40.48 million PLN, accounting for nearly half of Poland's total cabbage imports during this period.
