Poland requires identity verification for certain Ukrainian PESEL UKR holders

Certain Ukrainian citizens residing in Poland must confirm their identity at a municipal office by August 31 to maintain their PESEL UKR status. This requirement specifically applies to individuals who were granted the status based on a personal statement without presenting a valid passport or other travel document at the time of application. This situation frequently affects children whose guardians obtained PESEL numbers for them before they possessed travel documents.

Failure to complete this verification by the deadline may result in the loss of UKR status and the subsequent loss of temporary protection rights. This includes the loss of eligibility for the 800 plus child benefit, which is distributed by the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS).

Those affected must visit any municipal or city office to present a valid travel document, such as a passport. Individuals who do not currently possess a valid passport are advised to contact a Ukrainian consular office urgently. Those who originally provided a valid travel document when receiving their PESEL UKR do not need to re-register, as their status is automatically extended until March 4, 2027.
