Poland researchers implement digital rings to track white storks

Researchers in southern Poland have introduced digital rings to track the migration and movements of white storks. This technological advancement marks a shift from traditional aluminum or plastic rings and satellite telemetry backpacks to more streamlined electronic devices.

The new INTAG digital rings are small, solar-powered devices equipped with Bluetooth modules. When a stork comes near a compatible mobile device or smartphone, its location data is automatically transmitted to a system used by scientists. This automation allows for faster and larger-scale data collection compared to manual field observations and physical ring reading.

The ringing process is performed on young storks, approximately six weeks old, using lifts to reach nests safely. The procedure is designed to be quick and painless to minimize stress on the chicks and their families.
