White stork research and birdwatching studies in Poland

Overview

Researchers in Poland have implemented new technologies and methodologies to study white storks and birdwatching behaviors.

Initial efforts focused on the introduction of INTAG digital rings in southern Poland. These small, solar-powered devices use Bluetooth modules to automatically transmit location data to scientists when the birds come near compatible mobile devices. This method aims to provide faster, larger-scale data collection than traditional aluminum rings or satellite telemetry.

Subsequent research expanded into behavioral and visual studies. Scientists from the Poznań University of Life Sciences and the University of Szczecin have investigated how birdwatchers’ biological chronotypes influence their species preferences. Additionally, the ‘StorkLens Survey’ was launched, utilizing cameras mounted on stork transmitters to capture images during migration. This project incorporates citizen science by asking the public to evaluate the artistic value of the photographs, noting that aesthetic appeal can influence public interest and conservation efforts.
