Poland restructures Warmian-Masurian brigade into border defence unit

Poland's Territorial Defence Forces are forming a new Border Defence Component (Komponent Obrony Pogranicza, KOP) to strengthen security along the country's eastern and north‑eastern frontiers. On 15 July, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz appointed commanders for four brigades that will become part of the KOP. One of these is the 4th Warmian‑Masurian Brigade, which is being re‑formed as the 4th Warmian‑Masurian Border Defence Brigade.

Colonel Cezary Kiszkowiak, previously commander of the Territorial Defence brigade, will lead the new unit. The brigade will expand its tasks to include border protection, cooperating with the Border Guard and operational forces, and will develop capabilities such as reconnaissance systems, fire support, unmanned‑air technologies, drone defence, and enhanced logistics. The reform aligns with Poland’s "Shield East" national deterrence and defence programme and revives historic border‑defence traditions.

The restructuring aims to improve Poland's resilience against hybrid threats and to ensure a modern, well‑equipped force with deep local terrain knowledge operating on the border regions.
