Poland rolls out direct‑deposit bottle‑return machines

Poland has begun installing new bottle‑return machines that credit the deposit directly to a payment card, eliminating paper vouchers. The first units were placed in Warsaw’s Białołęka district and in Zamość, with operators Kaucja.pl and PolKa – Polska Kaucja overseeing the rollout. The system is part of a broader reform of the national deposit scheme, aiming to make returns faster and more convenient.

Plans call for more than 500 machines in the Warsaw region, with about 15 added each week, and eventual expansion to other major cities such as Łódź, Poznań, Wrocław, Kraków and the Upper Silesia region. Over the next three to four years, up to 4,000 devices could operate nationwide. Officials, including Joanna Górecka of the Polish Deposit System, stress that receipts will no longer be required, though some shopkeepers still request them.

The initiative is expected to increase recycling rates and reduce queues at traditional store‑based return points.
