Poland sees coffee prices surge and fertilizer market split

Coffee prices in Poland jumped more than 15% on July 6, with Arabica futures reaching 350 cents per pound – the largest single‑day rise since 2000. Analysts attribute the spike to El Niño‑related weather extremes in Brazil’s Minas Gerais region, where unusually heavy rains followed by a sharp dry spell disrupted harvests, combined with higher production costs from expensive fertilizers, fuel and labour, and dwindling inventories.

At the same time, Poland’s fertilizer market shows diverging trends. Prices for nitrogen‑based urea have fallen, with the commodity now about 300 zł per tonne cheaper, while phosphate and multi‑nutrient fertilizers are rising as raw‑material shortages and import dependencies push up costs. Farmers remain hesitant to purchase, awaiting further price moves, and producers cite high gas, energy and CO₂‑allowance expenses as ongoing pressure points.

Both developments tighten cost pressures for consumers and agricultural producers across the country.
