Poland mushroom foraging season sees high yields and safety warnings

Autumn mushroom foraging is in full swing across Poland, with significant yields reported in regions like Silesia, where users of the ‘Sezon Na Grzyby’ app recorded nearly 250 kg in a single 10-day period. Brown boletes have emerged as the most popular find, accounting for 42 percent of reported catches.

Experts and enthusiasts emphasize proper preparation and safety. For preservation, traditional methods like fermenting saffron milk caps (rydze) are seeing a resurgence, while others recommend blanching mushrooms with oak or cherry leaves to maintain a crunchy texture during marinating. Proper drying and freezing techniques are also highlighted to prevent bitterness or rubbery textures.

Safety remains a priority, as the risk of misidentifying edible species with poisonous ones persists. In the Świętokrzyskie region, sanitary inspectors note that species like the common milk cap are often mistaken for edible saffron milk caps. For those uncertain, local sanitary-epidemiological stations offer free expert consultations to prevent poisoning.
