Poland Senate approves new legislation to support biomethane production

Polish Senate committees have unanimously approved an amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act, which includes new support systems for large-scale biogas and biomethane plants. The legislation aims to bolster the domestic energy sector by utilizing agricultural waste and plant and animal production byproducts.

According to Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment Sławomir Ćwik, Poland has the potential to produce at least 3.2 billion cubic meters of biomethane annually, with estimates reaching up to 8 billion cubic meters under intensive agricultural use. This represents a significant portion of the country's total annual gas consumption of approximately 20 billion cubic meters.

Currently, Poland operates nearly 400 biogas plants, including fewer than 200 agricultural ones, with a combined capacity of roughly 300 MW. However, the biomethane sector remains in its infancy, with only two operational biomethane plants currently in use, a figure notably lower than the more than 11,000 biogas and biomethane facilities found in Germany.
