Poland sets guidelines for solar panel durability and 5‑year inspections

Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations in Poland are designed for several decades of service. Panels can generate electricity for 30–40 years, but their output gradually declines, with most systems retaining over 80% of their original power after about 25 years. The decline slows after the first few years, typically falling to around 0.5% per year. In contrast, auxiliary components such as inverters and battery storage have shorter lifespans of roughly 10–15 years and often need replacement twice during a panel’s life.

Polish building law requires a mandatory inspection of PV systems at least once every five years. The review checks DC and AC wiring, connections, protective devices, inverter condition, grounding, and lightning protection, and may include thermographic imaging to spot hot spots. Larger installations (over 6.5 kW) also need fire‑safety project approval and notification to the State Fire Service. Qualified electricians or specialised firms must carry out the inspections, which are also common conditions of manufacturers' warranties and insurance policies.
