Poland shifts €1.8bn EU rail funding from CPK to Pomorskie project

The Polish government decided to reallocate up to 1.8 billion zloty of EU money that had been earmarked for the Central Communication Port (CPK) high‑speed rail and the delayed Łódź tunnel. The funds will instead support the Pomorskie Metropolitan Railway (PKM Południe), a smaller, faster‑to‑complete project that the Ministry of Infrastructure says will improve Poland’s chances of demonstrating effective use of EU Cohesion funds.

At the same time, the Centre for EU Transport Projects (CUPT) has contracted almost 80 % of the EU transport budget allocated to Poland, signing contracts worth about 77 billion zloty. The money finances rail upgrades, road construction, public‑transport fleets and intermodal links. The largest beneficiaries are PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) and the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA), which together have received over 54 billion zloty for projects such as new railway lines, express roads and safety improvements.
