Poland signs $4.8bn deal for Swedish A26 submarines

Poland and Sweden signed a contract on 29 June in Gdynia for three Saab A26‑class submarines, valued at about 47 billion Swedish crowns (approximately $4.8 billion). The agreement, witnessed by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, calls for deliveries by 2038.

The deal includes a comprehensive maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) programme to be carried out in Poland, with Swedish Saab committing to work closely with Polish industry and to integrate local firms into the supply chain. The submarines will be equipped with drone swarms for protecting critical infrastructure and coastal assets in the Baltic Sea. A separate agreement provides for a support vessel, based on the former HMS Södermanland, to aid training and operations. The contract is part of a broader effort to modernise the Polish Navy and deepen defence‑industrial cooperation between Warsaw and Stockholm.
