Poland strengthens eastern border with 'Eastern Shield' defense program

Poland is advancing its 'Eastern Shield' program to strengthen its borders with Russia and Belarus. The initiative involves constructing an 800-kilometer defensive line consisting of physical barriers, such as anti-tank ditches and concrete obstacles, alongside advanced surveillance and drone defense systems.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the project aims to make the eastern border 'safer than ever before' and serves as an investment in peace through deterrence. To support these security efforts, Poland has increased its 2026 defense budget to 200 billion zlotys, representing nearly 5% of its GDP, making it a leading NATO member in proportional defense spending.

The project is receiving international support, including technical and military assistance from the German Bundeswehr, with approximately 40 German engineers working on fortifications in northeastern Poland. Additionally, the European Union is providing financial support through its 'SAFE' defense program. Beyond physical barriers, the Polish government is prioritizing the continuous modernization of its air defense capabilities.
