Poland expands East Shield defense program with NATO allies

Poland is advancing its 'East Shield' (Tarcza Wschód) defense program, which has transitioned from a national initiative to an allied NATO project. The multi-layered system aims to secure borders with Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine through a combination of physical fortifications, advanced technology, and long-range strike capabilities.

Key components include the 'Eastern Sword' (Wschodni Miecz) initiative, which focuses on long-range precision strikes using JASSM missiles and weaponry deployed via F-16 and F-35 aircraft. To bolster physical defenses, Poland is establishing 53 storage sites for engineering elements along its northern and eastern borders. Officials stated that using Baobab systems, the military could mine the entire eastern and northern borders within 48 hours. Approximately 150 km of critical border sections are already secured, with a goal of reaching 200 km by the end of the year.

International cooperation is central to the project. German engineers are currently assisting with the construction of anti-tank barriers, and additional engineering teams from the United States, United Kingdom, and France are expected to join. The program is also integrating modern technologies such as drones, anti-drone systems, and artificial intelligence, supported by the EU's SAFE mechanism.
