Poland strengthens NATO eastern flank with US and UK engineering support
Poland is significantly strengthening its eastern NATO flank through the ‘Tarcza Wschód’ (East Shield) program. Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that American and British engineering teams will soon arrive in Poland to assist with fortifications along the borders with Russia and Belarus. Additionally, 80 French engineering soldiers are expected to join the initiative.
The program, which has been active for two years, has already secured 150 km of critical border sections, with a goal of reaching 200 km by the end of the year. Approximately 10 billion euros have been allocated to these border security measures. The defense strategy includes the deployment of drone and anti-drone systems, as well as the movement of nearly 300,000 concrete anti-tank obstacles.
A new component called ‘Wschodni Miecz’ (Eastern Sword) is being introduced, focusing on long-range and precision strike capabilities, including JASSM missiles and drone-missiles. Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk stated that, through the Baobab systems, the Polish military could potentially mine the entire eastern and northern borders within 48 hours. The program has evolved from a national project into an allied effort involving engineers from Germany and other NATO partners.
