Poland tightens shoe waste rules ahead of 2026 fine system

From 1 January 2025 Poland will expand its selective collection system to include used footwear under new EU‑driven circular‑economy regulations. Shoes discarded with mixed‑waste may be deemed a violation, allowing municipalities to impose higher collection fees or fines. Citizens must deliver old shoes to designated textile‑waste points, to be recycled into materials such as sports‑field surfacing or insulation, or hand them over to charitable organisations if still usable. Local authorities set the precise procedures and penalties, and many are adding dedicated containers or mobile collection events to support compliance.

Improper disposal of synthetic‑based shoes, which decompose over decades, can lead to environmental contamination, prompting the stricter enforcement. Households are advised to check municipal guidelines before discarding footwear.
