Poland to eliminate A4 toll booths and launch distance‑based city fares in 2027

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) plans to dismantle the unused toll‑booth infrastructure on the A4 motorway between Wrocław and Gliwice, with construction starting after a contract is signed in late 2026 and lasting about a year. The project, budgeted at under 11 million zł, will also prepare the Katowice–Kraków section for free use by passenger cars and motorcycles when the current concession ends in March 2027; e‑TOLL will still apply to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and buses.

Separately, the Kraków City Council has approved a distance‑based fare system for trams and buses, to be introduced in January 2027. The dynamic tariff will charge a minimum of 4 zł (2 zł for concessionary tickets) for trips up to 3.5 km and add 0.50 zł (0.25 zł) per additional 500 m, with caps of 9 zł (4.50 zł) per ride and daily limits of 20 zł (10 zł). The system will be integrated with the mKraków app and operate alongside existing ticket types.
