Poland to expand insulin pump reimbursement to adults

The Polish Ministry of Health has introduced a draft regulation to expand the reimbursement of insulin pumps to include patients over the age of 26. Currently, reimbursement is limited to younger patients, but the new proposal aims to cover individuals with type 1 and type 3 diabetes who meet specific medical criteria.

To qualify for the expanded support, adult patients must demonstrate one of several conditions, such as the continuation of existing pump therapy, recurrent severe hypoglycemia, dawn phenomenon hyperglycemia, glycemic instability, or the presence of chronic diabetic complications. The change is intended to improve quality of life and prevent acute and chronic complications.

The expansion is expected to take effect on January 1, 2027. According to analysis by the Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariff System, approximately 3,232 patients will benefit in the first year. This number is projected to grow steadily, reaching nearly 4,000 patients by 2030. The financial burden of the expanded program will be covered by the National Health Fund (NFZ).
