Poland to expand tank fleet to 1,600 units by 2032
Poland is undergoing an unprecedented military rearmament program aimed at establishing conventional deterrence against Russia. Lacking nuclear weapons, Warsaw is pursuing a strategy of mass, intending to double its current tank fleet of approximately 800 units to 1,600 by 2032.
By 2030, Poland plans to deploy 1,100 tanks, a number that would exceed the combined armored strength of Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. To fund this expansion, Poland is allocating 4.7% of its GDP to defense in 2025, a rate significantly higher than most European neighbors.
The modernization effort involves diversifying suppliers to ensure interoperability with NATO and reduce dependency on single sources. The new fleet will include American M1 Abrams, South Korean K2 Black Panthers, and modernized German Leopard tanks, while phasing out older Soviet-era models by 2032.
