Poland to grant city status to 12 villages and revise municipal borders

The Polish Ministry of the Interior and Administration has drafted a regulation to give city status to twelve villages across seven voivodeships. If the Council of Ministers approves the proposal, the new towns – Choceń, Milejów, Rzekuń, Czudec, Gorzyce, Wielopole Skrzyńskie, Żołynia, Bakałarzewo, Filipów, Mielnik, Kazimierz Biskupi and Kobyla Góra – would become cities on 1 January 2027 (the draft also notes that many boundary adjustments would take effect on 1 January 2028). The plan also includes changes to the limits of seven existing towns and several gminas, and proposes renaming the gmina of Chełm in Lublin Voivodeship to Pokrówka. Additional border revisions for Żory–Suszec and Kalisz Pomorski–Ińsko are slated for 2028.

The project is currently in the consultation stage, with 36 local government applications considered. Final adoption rests with the Council of Ministers, and the timeline for implementation would span from 2027 to 2028 depending on the specific measures.
