Poland christens ORP Wicher, first Miecznik-class frigate
Poland has reached a major milestone in its naval modernization with the christening of the ORP Wicher, the first of three multi-purpose frigates under the Miecznik program. The ceremony took place on August 12, 2026, at the PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia, attended by high-ranking officials including President Karol Nawrocki and Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The ORP Wicher is approximately 138 meters long with a displacement of about 7,000 tons. Following the christening, the vessel was scheduled for launching into the Gulf of Gdańsk on August 13 via a specialized semi-submersible barge, the BOA Barge 33. This complex engineering operation marks a significant step in returning large-scale combat ship production to Polish shipyards.
The Miecznik program, valued at over 15 billion PLN, aims to provide the Polish Navy with three modern vessels: Wicher, Burza, and Huragan. These ships are intended to serve as the backbone of Poland's surface forces, providing air defense and maritime security in the Baltic Sea. The first vessel is expected to be handed over to the Navy by the end of 2029.
