Poland and Slovakia implement new driving regulations

New driving regulations have been implemented in Poland and Slovakia, introducing stricter rules for various categories of motorists.

In Poland, new laws for novice drivers include a mandatory probationary period. For adults, this lasts two years, while for 17-year-olds, it lasts three years (up to age 20). These drivers must adhere to a zero-alcohol limit (0.0‰) and face stricter penalties, such as a 12-point limit over the probationary period, which can trigger mandatory training or license revocation. Additionally, 17-year-olds are restricted to driving within Poland and must be accompanied by an experienced driver for the first six months.

In Slovakia, legislative changes target vehicles registered in third countries (non-EU/EEA). A proposed amendment by the SNS party aims to establish a 90-day deadline for registering such vehicles to improve technical and insurance oversight. Furthermore, Slovakian law has been updated to include rehabilitation programs and retraining for repeat traffic offenders to address declining driving competence.

On a broader European level, new EU directives are moving toward linking driver's license validity more closely to medical fitness, with member states implementing systems to monitor physical and mental health requirements for safe driving.
