Poland to Permit Agricultural Tractors as Privileged Emergency Vehicles

The Polish government is preparing amendments to the Road Traffic Act and the regulation on technical conditions for vehicles, allowing agricultural tractors to be classified as privileged emergency vehicles. The change will enable tractors to display blue lights and sound signals, permitting their use by fire services and other rescue agencies during fires, floods, snowstorms and other emergencies where conventional vehicles cannot reach.

The amendment modifies Article 53 of the 1997 Road Traffic Law and updates the Ministry of Infrastructure's technical standards, expanding the list of vehicles eligible for emergency privileges. The State Fire Service has advocated for the revision, citing the tractors' off‑road capabilities, high ground clearance and ability to transport pumps or aid in evacuations. Similar adaptations are already in use in German municipalities such as Wiesmoor, where modified John Deere tractors serve emergency roles.
