Poland warns of potential major Russian operations this year

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has stated that the government has received intelligence suggesting Russia may be planning a significant operation as early as this year. While Sikorski did not disclose specific details or sources, he suggested that President Vladimir Putin might seek a pretext for mobilization, potentially through a false flag operation where Russia claims to be the victim of an unprovoked attack.

Sikorski noted that while a full-scale invasion would be “madness,” Moscow might instead pursue ambiguous actions designed to complicate the invocation of NATO’s Article 5. He highlighted regional tensions in the Baltic Sea, noting Russia’s likely interest in establishing a land corridor from Belarus to the Kaliningrad exclave through Lithuania.

Furthermore, the Polish minister assessed that Russia aims to isolate Ukraine from Western military support and could sustain the conflict for another one to two years despite economic pressures. He observed that Russia is currently relying on mobilization and the destruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during harsh winters to achieve its goals. He added that the situation could shift if Ukraine successfully destroys more than half of Russia’s oil refining capacity.
