Poland's A2 Expansion and A4 Toll Removal Bring Major Road Changes

The Polish Ministry of Infrastructure announced that the first contract for adding extra lanes to the A2 motorway between Warsaw and Łódź has been signed. Construction will begin under traffic in October 2026, with night‑time work, reduced speed limits to 70 km/h and temporary detours. The Warsaw‑Lowicz section is planned for completion by the end of 2027 and the stretch near Łódź by early 2028, although court protests over subcontractor selection could cause delays.

Meanwhile, the concession for the A4 segment linking Katowice and Kraków ends in March 2027. From March 2024 passenger‑car users will travel this portion toll‑free. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways also intends to add a third lane to the A4, with the expansion set to start in 2030 to ease chronic congestion.
