Poland's A4 Highway to Return to State Control in 2027

The 30‑year concession for the Katowice‑Kraków section of the A4 motorway will end on 15 March 2027. At midnight on 15‑16 March, the state road authority Generalna Dyrekcja Dróg Krajowych i Autostrad (GDDKiA) will assume management of the 61‑km stretch from Stalexport Autostrada, a subsidiary of the Italian Mundys group.

Stalexport has already begun a second‑phase renovation, planning to resurface another 15.6 km of roadway in the second half of 2026, complete upgrades at the Balice toll plaza, and finish new service areas at Rudno and Grojec by October. Additional works include drainage system modernization, acoustic‑screen refurbishment and preparation for a future third lane expansion, which the government intends to start after the concession ends.

Current tolls for passenger cars on the concessioned segment are 36 zł one‑way (18 zł per toll plaza). The state plans to lower fees for lighter vehicles, eliminate manual toll gates and eventually widen the motorway to a three‑lane configuration to accommodate heavier traffic.
