Poland's defence exports surge in 2025, led by Piorun missile sales

Data from the UN Conventional Weapons Register show that in 2025 Poland markedly expanded its arms exports. The country sold 345 portable air‑defence Piorun missile sets, with Lithuania the largest buyer at 202 units, followed by Belgium (48), Norway (42), Estonia (33) and Sweden (20). A separate contract with Sweden, signed in September 2025, is valued at about €3 billion and deliveries began in December.

Poland also supplied Ukraine with 120 armoured vehicles, 296 drones, Leopard 2A4 tanks, Haubice Goździk howitzers and large quantities of small arms. Additional sales reached Guatemala (400 rifles), the United States (552 pistols and revolvers) and other markets such as Armenia, Indonesia, Romania, Canada and the United Arab Emirates.

An industry expert cautions that despite the export growth, Poland’s defence sector lacks a coherent long‑term strategy. The forthcoming 2026‑2030 Defence Industry Development Strategy is expected to address gaps in production capacity, modern technology, skilled workforce and dependence on foreign supply chains. The expert stresses that without a clear national security vision, these structural deficiencies will persist.
