Poland's defense industry sees record growth and strategic expansion

Poland's defense industry is experiencing significant growth driven by record spending, which is projected to reach 200 billion PLN (approximately 4.8% of GDP) in 2026. The sector is benefiting from substantial capital, including 43.7 billion EUR from the EU's SAFE program, with 89% of these funds directed toward defense enterprises. Additionally, the banking sector has increased its support for the industry, exemplified by strategic cooperation between PKO Bank Polski and Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ).

To capitalize on this momentum, PGZ is forming a national team of companies and research institutes to develop ballistic and anti-ballistic technologies. The group aims to conduct tests on two specific technological areas within six months. This initiative is designed to foster domestic capabilities for detecting and countering ballistic missiles, independent of external programs like Freya.

There is also a growing focus on dual-use technologies, with 70% of Polish companies identifying them as a key development area. This sector offers opportunities for industries facing slowdowns, such as automotive and appliances, to repurpose production capacity. Experts suggest the defense sector and its supply chains could require approximately 250,000 new workers by 2035. However, challenges remain, including lengthy certification procedures, complex formal requirements, and intellectual property concerns.
