Poland's deposit return system collects 5 billion items in first year

Poland's deposit return system has completed its first year of operation, with the Ministry of Climate and Environment reporting the collection of approximately 5 billion items, including plastic bottles and metal cans. While officials highlight the system's success in meeting collection targets and its economic viability, the transition has faced several challenges.

Retailers and municipal waste companies have reported difficulties, including technical issues with reverse vending machines and a decrease in the volume of recyclable materials entering municipal waste streams. MPO Warsaw estimates a loss of approximately 20 million PLN due to reduced PET and aluminum collection. Additionally, some reports indicate security vulnerabilities in certain machines that could allow for fraudulent returns.

Public perception of the system is mixed but evolving. While initial enthusiasm was high, recent surveys show a split in consumer opinion, though acceptance is growing as the practice becomes integrated into daily shopping habits. Future plans include expanding the system to include small glass bottles and beverage cartons to meet EU recycling directives.
