Poland's deposit return system collects 5 billion items in first year

One year after its launch on October 1, 2025, Poland's deposit return system has collected approximately 5 billion bottles and cans. Data from the Ministry of Climate and Environment indicates that monthly collection rates have risen significantly, reaching about 900 million units per month. The system currently utilizes over 65,500 return points, with automated machines handling 90% of returns.

Retailer Kaufland reported receiving over 207 million items through its network, with a peak summer period seeing averages of 40 million items monthly. The retailer also noted a record single return of 3,559 items by one customer.

Despite these successes, challenges remain. The EKO-UNIA report highlights a gap in the system regarding single-use glass packaging, which remains outside the deposit scheme and continues to impact local municipalities. To address systemic issues, the Ministry of Climate and Environment is considering extending the validity of deposit vouchers from 30 to 90 days and expanding the system to include small single-use glass bottles.

In Skarżysko-Kamienna, a local initiative linking free public transport to municipal waste fee payments has reportedly helped increase passenger numbers by 20% and improved waste management compliance.
