Poland's deposit return system reaches 3.2 billion containers returned

Poland's deposit return system has reached a significant scale, with approximately 3.2 billion containers, including PET bottles and aluminum cans, returned to collection points as of late July 2026. The network of collection sites has expanded to roughly 64,000 locations, including over 17,500 automated machines.

While the system is scaling, it is creating financial challenges for municipal waste management companies. In Bielsko-Biała, the local waste management plant (ZGO) reported a significant drop in PET and aluminum collection, leading to an estimated 2 million PLN loss in revenue for 2026. Municipalities are facing a similar trend where the loss of high-value raw materials from communal waste streams reduces income while processing costs remain high.

The Ministry of Climate and Environment is considering several regulatory updates to refine the system. These include extending the validity period of deposit vouchers beyond the current 30-day minimum and potentially expanding the system to include single-use glass bottles. To assist consumers and retailers, a new search tool has been launched via Kaucja.pl, allowing users to verify deposit eligibility using EAN codes.
