Poland's deposit system faces technical errors and municipal revenue warnings

Poland's new deposit system, implemented on October 1, 2025, is facing early operational and economic challenges. While the system provides a 50 groszy deposit for plastic and metal containers, reusable glass bottles are entitled to a 1 PLN refund. However, reports have emerged of technical errors, such as a customer at Kaufland receiving only 50 groszy for glass bottles, which the retailer attributed to a “system error.”

Beyond technical glitches, local governments are warning of significant financial consequences. Municipalities report a loss of up to half of their revenue from the sale of raw materials due to the shift toward consumer-led returns. Officials suggest that without legislation regarding extended producer responsibility, these revenue shortfalls may lead to increased waste management fees for residents.
