Poland's deposit system introduces EAN search tool and sees rising consumer participation

Poland's deposit return system, which has been operational since October 2025, is seeing new developments in both infrastructure and consumer behavior. Kaucja.pl has launched a new search engine that allows consumers, retailers, and collection points to verify if a specific packaging is subject to a deposit and the exact amount by entering its EAN code. This tool aims to increase transparency and resolve disputes between customers and retailers.

Recent research conducted by SW Research for the 'Return For Good' initiative by fritz-koli reveals that the system has significant social and economic impacts. Approximately 89% of adult respondents report returning deposit-eligible packaging. Notably, about 1.03 million adults in Poland intentionally collect bottles and cans from public spaces as a source of additional income. While 63% of users only return packaging from their own households, 25% of adults also return items found in public areas, driven by both financial incentives and a desire to maintain public cleanliness.
