Poland's Shield East border fortifications fall far short of targets, critics say
French analyst Clement Molin, using satellite imagery, reported that real fortifications of the Shield East project cover only a few kilometres of Poland’s 744 km eastern border, far below the programme’s goal of over 200 km secured by 2026 and full completion by 2028. He noted missing concrete barriers, barbed‑wire, and poorly placed bunkers, especially in the Suwałki gap where Poland borders Russia, Belarus and Lithuania.
Former deputy minister and European MP Maciej Wąsik echoed the criticism, stating on radio that after two years only “several kilometres” have been built – roughly a kilometre per year – which would would take 60 years to finish the work. The Ministry of National Defence counters that the project is multi‑layered, combining engineering dams, material depots, reconnaissance, drone defence and the use of natural obstacles such as forests and wetlands. Government releases cite a total budget of €10 billion, a planned 450 million‑zloty “Green Shield East” ecological component, and an upcoming acceleration phase in 2026.
