Poland's Ministry of Education proposes new behavior grading rules with patriotism criterion

Poland's Ministry of Education has drafted amendments to the regulations governing student assessment, set to take effect on 1 September. The changes introduce more detailed criteria for the behavior grade, which, while not affecting class promotion, remains decisive for the distinguished‑student diploma. Alongside responsibility, cooperation and community engagement, a "patriotic attitude" will be formally evaluated, defined as respect for the nation’s history, symbols and traditions as well as for local communities and other cultures.

The reform also standardises other assessment procedures, including classification exams, remedial tests and homework rules, aiming for uniform practice across all schools. Critics warn that the patriotism clause may be subjective and give teachers excessive discretion, while supporters argue it reinforces civic values.
