Poland's GUS launches household budget survey, requests receipts from selected households

The Central Statistical Office of Poland (GUS) has started the Badanie Budżetów Gospodarstw Domowych (BBGD), a nationwide survey of household incomes and expenditures. Households are chosen at random and an enumerator may knock on the door, present an official ID and explain the study. Participation is voluntary and respondents can refuse.

If they agree, participants receive a GUS‑branded envelope and are asked to collect all purchase receipts for one month, recording any items without a receipt on paper. The survey can also be completed via telephone interview or a paper/e‑online budget diary. No payment is offered. The data are used to compile official statistics that feed into inflation indices, the minimum wage level, municipal waste‑fee rates, poverty measures and tax‑benefit models.

GUS advises citizens to verify the enumerator's identity on the official GUS website or by contacting the regional office, and warns that genuine officials will never request banking credentials.
