Poland GUS household budget survey

Overview

In early July 2026, Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) announced the launch of a new Household Budget Survey (BBGD), asking selected households to provide purchase receipts for a month. By early August, the survey had moved into full nationwide implementation.

Enumerators began visiting households, offering several data‑collection options—including receipt collection, telephone interviews, and self‑filled paper or online budget books. Participation remained voluntary and free, with respondents able to verify enumerators’ identities via official ID badges and business cards. In cases where a specific expense is not covered by a receipt, respondents are asked to record the value and the item or service purchased.

As of mid-September 2026, the survey remains an ongoing nationwide research effort. Statistics Poland continues to use representative sampling methods to select households, which may be visited by surveyors without prior announcement. Participants continue to use special envelopes provided by the agency to document spending on food, housing, transport, and services, manually recording any expenditures that lack a formal receipt.

The gathered information is intended to generate key economic indicators on income, spending patterns, food consumption, housing conditions, and material wellbeing for use by the Polish parliament, government agencies, the National Bank of Poland, Eurostat, and researchers.
