Poland's insurance rules allow multiple payouts for child injuries and raise fines for uninsured cars

In Poland, a child who breaks a bone while on vacation can receive compensation from several separate policies. Claims may be filed with the at‑fault driver's third‑party liability (OC) insurance, the school's accident‑insurance (NNW), the vehicle’s personal NNW cover and the home‑insurance NNW add‑on. Each insurer assesses the claim independently, using the sum insured and the percentage of permanent disability, so the payouts can add up. Medical‑cost refunds, however, are limited to actual expenses and cannot be duplicated across policies.

Starting 1 January 2026, Poland will increase penalties for driving without the mandatory OC liability cover. Fines range from 1 920 zł for a gap of 1‑3 days to 9 610 zł for cars left uninsured longer than two weeks. Heavy‑duty vehicles face up to 14 420 zł. The Ubezpieczeniowy Fundusz Gwarancyjny (UFG) automatically detects gaps by cross‑checking vehicle registers with insurers, and many penalties arise when buyers of used cars inherit an expired policy from the previous owner.
