Poland suspends MiG‑29 deliveries to Ukraine, demands drone technology
Poland has halted the transfer of nine MiG‑29 fighter jets that were slated for Ukraine. The country previously supplied a total of 14 MiG‑29 aircraft to Kyiv by April 2024. Warsaw says the jets will only be released if Ukraine shares its drone technology or covers the costs of modernising the aging aircraft.
Deputy Defence Minister Paweł Zalewski disclosed that a NATO ally – widely believed to be Bulgaria – asked Poland about the MiG‑29s, but he declined to name the country. Despite the enquiry, Poland still intends to give the jets to Ukraine. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz added that the modernisation expenses should be borne by Ukraine or its allies. The aircraft are in poor condition and would require extensive refurbishment before they could be used in combat.
