Poland's NFZ launches 'returns' scheme to cut sanatorium wait times

Poland's National Health Fund (NFZ) operates a free "returns" (zwroty) system that reallocates sanatorium slots when patients cancel their previously scheduled treatment. Approximately 15‑20 % of allocated places are relinquished each year, allowing waiting patients to be offered a turn within days instead of the usual 12‑18‑month queue.

To use the scheme, a patient must hold a confirmed NFZ referral, submit a statement of readiness to the regional NFZ office, and be prepared to travel within about 14 days of the offer. The NFZ notifies eligible patients, who then have 24‑48 hours to accept; once accepted the appointment cannot be altered without penalty. The fund distinguishes justified cancellations (health, family emergencies, etc.) from unjustified ones, the former preserving the patient’s place in the queue. Paid services promising faster access are identified as scams.

The mechanism applies to popular spa towns such as Zakopane, Krynica‑Zdrój and Ustroń, where waiting lists are longest. Regular contact with the NFZ office is advised to catch newly released slots.
