Poland's Sejm passes AI law establishing new oversight commission

The Polish parliament approved a new Artificial Intelligence Act, aligning national law with the EU AI Act. The legislation creates the Commission for the Development and Safety of Artificial Intelligence (KRiBSI), a regulatory body empowered to audit AI systems, handle complaints, and enforce compliance, including fines and market withdrawals for non‑conforming high‑risk applications.

The bill received overwhelming support, with 421 votes in favour, three against and 18 abstentions. KRiBSI will oversee AI use in sectors such as education, critical infrastructure, employment, and migration, and will issue permits for high‑risk systems. It will also introduce regulatory sandboxes to allow firms to test innovations under supervision, with the first sandbox expected by early August.

The commission’s leadership will be appointed by the Sejm with Senate approval and will include representatives from major supervisory agencies, alongside a Social Council of AI experts. The law now proceeds to the Senate for further consideration before presidential signing.
