Poland's Shield East Border Fortification Progress Assessed

Poland's Shield East (Tarcza Wschód) defence programme, launched in May 2024, aims to fortify up to 200 km of the border with Russia and Belarus by the end of the year. The Polish army reports that roughly 100 km of the line is now covered, but Ukrainian analysts from the portal Defence Express argue that this figure includes material stored in depots and that the actual length of completed fortifications is lower. The operation involves a large logistical effort, with 16 material‑storage points already established and seven more planned, and a target delivery of about 300 000 concrete anti‑tank barriers, shelter components and barbed‑wire by mid‑October.

Analysts warn that installing the barriers, building shelters, laying wire, deploying mines and possibly digging anti‑tank ditches will take considerable time, and that the programme may not be adapted to modern threats such as drones. They stress the risk that insufficient time could prevent the use of the prepared materials, leaving the intended defensive line incomplete.
