Poland’s single‑person households now exceed one‑third of all homes

Despite a declining population, the number of households in Poland grew from 12.7 million in 2006 to an estimated 15.5 million in 2025. The share of one‑person households rose sharply, reaching 35 % of all dwellings, up from 22 % in 2006. Households formed by couples increased to 40 % from 36 %, while those with children fell to 25 % of all households, down from 37 % a decade earlier. Families with one child remain the majority among child‑bearing households, and the proportion of families with three or more children declined from 14 % to 10 %. Multi‑generational arrangements are becoming rarer; only 6 % of seniors now live with children, compared with 15 % in 2006. These trends suggest growing demand for smaller apartments and raise questions about future care provisions for the elderly.
